Installing Joomla locally using XAMPP

  1. Download Joomla from the web site http://www.joomla.org
  2. Create a database using the XAMPP control panel; by clicking on MySQL Admin
  3. Create a folder for Joomla in the htdocs folder of XAMPP
  4. Extract the Joomla! files into the Joomla folder in XAMPP’s htdocs folder.
  5. Point your browser to http://localhost/joomla (folder name) e.g. localhost/joomla
  6. The Joomla installer pops up and walks you through the process.
  7. Do not forget to install sample data.
  8. The most important information needed are:
    • Hostname: localhost
    • Username: root
    • Password: no password
    • Database name: Joomla (our example) you choose any name.
  9. You will have to give the site a name, input your e-mail address and choose a password for backend login.
  10. To login at the backend go to localhost/joomla/administrator.
  11. Make sure you enable “system legacy” by clicking plugin manager and enable system legacy.

Installing XAMPP

a.     Download XAMPP from the web site http//:www.apachefriends.org

b.     Double click to install > follow the prompts of the installer

i. The default prompt options are just fine make sure you create a short cut to XAMPP on your computer.
ii.  Start XAMPP> Start Apache and MySql by clicking start on the XAMPP Control Panel
iii.  Click on the Admin button of MySql to create a database for Joomla and WordPress
iv. The XAMPP version we installed is version 1.7.3

Installing MAMP

Mamp Installtion imageDownload the software at: http://mamp.info/en/ Click Download Now button. It’s a big download, so it takes a while to complete. (MAMP is free, but the download also includes the commercial product, MAMP Pro, which makes administering MAMP easier. You don’t need MAMP Pro for this tutorial, and you don’t have to install it either.)

Once downloaded, the file (named something like MAMP_1.7_universal.dmg.zip) unzips itself, and appears in the list of volumes in a Finder window. Upgrading your Joomla installation using Kickstart

1.     Download Kickstart start from the Akeeba: http://www.akeebabackup.com/download/akeeba-kickstart/akeeba-kickstart-3-1-5.html
2.     Download the latest Joomla! Upgrade Package for the Joomla.org web site: http://www.joomla.org/download.html

* Extract the files from the Kickstart.zip download.

* Upload the kickstart.php (from the extracted files from the kickstert package) and your Joomla backup file  into the root folder of your Joomla! installation using FTP.
Not e: if you have both the JPA and the ZIP back up files, upload the JPA (preferred) or the ZIP and not both.
* Point your browser to the localhost URL or the address of your Joomla! Web site, for example: http://localhost/joomla/kickstart.php or http://yourwebsite.com/kickstart.php.
